Belmont Pedestrian TransportationPlan

>> BELMONT FINAL PLAN <<

Project Description > The City of Belmont, NC received a grant from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to develop a pedestrian transportation plan.  The City of Belmont brought on Greenways Incorporated (GWI) to lead the planning effort, starting in January 2009.  Goals for the project include better pedestrian connectivity, the reduction of automobile dependence, and the replication of the Downtown’s pedestrian friendliness throughout the entire city.  The plan includes a strong focus on the future development of the Carolina Thread Trail, a major regional trail project.

GWI conducted an in-depth analysis and evaluation of current conditions for walking. Both on-road and off-road facilities were evaluated. Pedestrian solutions were recommended for key gaps in the existing sidewalk network along with crossing improvements, especially near schools and across major intersections.  GWI developed photo renderings for pedestrian improvements to serve as strong visualizations of how an existing environment can be improved.  The final plan includes policy update recommendations, program initiatives, implementation action steps, and funding opportunities.
